Studio 39 Salon Owner & Brand Creator
Blonde Specialist | Master Stylist
If I could rate a 10 star I would because I finally found a real blonde specialist! I love that a salon owner like Gemy makes education a priority and has built such an AMAZING team They actually work together and it’s impressive to watch! There’s nothing better than going to a salon where everyone is on the same page from start from finish.
Hair Cutter to Blonde Specialist
Before becoming a blonde specialist, Gemy’s career began at Mario Tricoci’s of Chicago. It was a departmentalized salon where stylists did haircutting and colorists did color and she chose to be a stylist to master the Vidal Sassoon haircutting techniques used by the owner.
Opening Studio 39
By age 23 her clientele included First Ladies, pro-athletes, and TV personalities. Her 4th generation entrepreneurial family background inspired her to open Studio 39 in 2001 when Mario’s changed ownership. left KC. After opening she wanted to learn advanced hair color techniques, so she attended the L’Oréal Academy in Soho, New York.
Kansas City’s First Blonde Specialist
Since she was born a natural blonde, she knew how tricky perfecting blonde hair color could be, so she focused on different techniques and her clientele grew by word of mouth. Though she learned the art of Balayage while at the Academy in New York, she practiced the skill of hand painting highlights for 2 years to perfect this service that was not yet being done in Kansas City before offering the service. That was when her clientele tripled and the salon had requests for the stylist who was a “blonde specialist.”
Setting Salon Standards
This made her realize there was a void for custom hair color in Kansas City, so to help her accommodate her appointment requests, she trained her hair assistants in her haircutting and color formulation. This became the foundation of the education taught in our Studio 39 associate program.
Around that time she started posting hair tips on the first S39 website which later became her popular blog. The salon training programs she created for hair cutting, hair color, highlighting and blonde work grew as well. Business development and team building classes were added to the training program.
With help from Megan, her first hair assistant, they began training staff and local salons on how to obtain growth in an industry known for low success rates. In the salon world, it is uncommon for Stylists to spend their entire career in the same salon, but due to the culture and early success established by Gemy & her team, here that’s the standard versus the exception.
One blog reader was a local producer who followed Gemy’s career and invited her to be a guest host on KCTV5 Better Beauty. Over 4 years she wrote the content for regularly aired segments until 2018.
Building plans for a second salon location began and in April 2019, the Lakewood Studio 39 opened in Lee’s Summit.
